The Organizing Committee for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games has one more tool to prepare the professionals that will work at the first South American edition of the biggest sports event on the planet. This Friday 23rd, the Brazilian Olympic Committee (BOC) and the Brazilian Army signed a cooperation term for the realization of courses and seminars with the aim of developing sports in Brazil, and increase the number of professionals in different areas.

The idea is to open up opportunities to professionals of more diverse areas connected to sports management, being them technicians, assistants, fitness coaches, physicians, lawyers, journalists and administrators”, explained Carlos Arthur Nuzman.

Agberto Guimarães explained that the first courses of the partnership will prepare workforce for the Rio 2010 Olympic and Paralympics Games. “We need to prepare a series of professionals for the Rio 2016 Committee board, such as sports facilities managers, competition managers and referees”, said Rio 2016 Committee Sports Director.

PSDB party Presidential candidate, José Serra, visited the Organizing Committee for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games this Wednesday 21st. Impressed with the quality of the city Olympic project, he guaranteed that, once elected, will do all possible for the event to be a fantastic one.
Serra was welcomed by Rio 2016 Committee president, Carlos Arthur Nuzman, and saw a presentation on the Rio de Janeiro Olympic project, with explanations about the impact of the event in Brazil and the Rio 2016 Committee attributions and of the Olympic Public Authority (the inter-federate consortium made up by the three levels of government and responsible for the execution of the infrastructure works of the Games). “I really liked the planning, it was a high quality presentation. Everything is carefully done and that puts our trust high. I am certain that, in the world’s most beautiful city, the Olympic Games will be terrific. I will do everything that I can for that to be so”, guaranteed Serra.
The improvements that the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will leave in areas such as transportation, environment and security were highlighted by José Serra. “Rio de Janeiro will gain a lot in these sectors. Besides, there will be an increase in the interest for sports, like in the Rio 2007 Pan-American Games, that were a basis for this project”, reminded Serra.
Olympic Medalists like Carlão (volleyball), Nalbert (volleyball), Flávio Canto (judo), Natália Falavigna (taekwondo), Adriana Behar (beach volley) and Marcelo Ferreira (yatching); and sports Confederation presidents also attended José Serra visit. “It is very important that the candidates get to know the Rio 2016 project and the work that is done in the sports world. It was an honor to welcome José Serra and show what is already done and the next steps of our work”, said Carlos Arthur Nuzman.
José Serra was the second presidential candidate to be welcomed at the Rio 2016 Committee. PV party candidate Marina Silva visited the entity on the 13th.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signed this Monday 19th, a provisional executive order to facilitate the financing of the constructions for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The document is part of the responsibility matrix defined for the preparation of the biggest sports event on the planet.

The signing ceremony was held at the Palácio do Planalto, in Brasília, and also had the presence of the Rio 2016 Committee president, Carlos Arthur Nuzman; Minister of Sports, Orlando Silva; Governor Sérgio Cabral; Mayor Eduardo Paes; and the Brazilian Paralympics Committee president, Andrew Parsons. “For the Rio 2016 Games organization, it is fundamental that the responsibility matrix is defined. So that each government entity is aware of its aims and investments”, explained Carlos Arthur Nuzman.

The provisional order also includes constructions foreseen for the 2014 World Cup and should prioritize investments in seven ports (R$ 740 million) and renovations in 13 airports (R$ 5, 5 billion). The document makes the 2014 World Cup host city limit for debts more flexible, and permits that the National Economic and Social Bank (BNDES, in Portuguese) prioritizes financing concessions for enterprises linked with the Rio 2016 Games.

President Lula made sure to highlight that the government investments will be marked by transparency. “Brazilians will be able to follow where each cent will go at the transparency portal at the Republics Comptroller General. I will do anything that might be necessary to lead the way to a good accomplishment of the 2014 World Cup and the Rio 2016 Olympic Games”.

PV (Green Party, in Portuguese) Presidential candidate, Senator Marina Silva, visited the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Organizing Committee head office, this Tuesday 13th. Marina was welcomed by President Carlos Arthur Nuzman and guaranteed that, once elected, will honor the commitments on the Rio 2016 Bid Dossier.

During the meeting, Rio 2016 Committee president made a presentation on the Rio de Janeiro Olympic project, explaining the impact of the event in Brazil and the attributions of the Rio 2016 Committee and the Olympic Public Authority (the inter-federative consortium made up by the three levels of governments and responsible for the execution of the Games infrastructure works).

Candidate Marina Silva praised the environmental actions foreseen for the Rio 2016 project and the benefits that the Olympic Games will bring to areas such as transport, sewage and sanitation, and security. But mostly highlighted the power of sport to unite the city and inspire youth. “All partnerships and contracts signed will be maintained, independently of who wins the election. An event such as the Olympic Games will open on our youngsters’ heart a window to a fair, diverse, sustainable and democratic future. As a Minister of the Environment, in 2007, this Olympic bid process was beginning and we made a series of suggestions for the environmental area. I was very happy to see that most of those are contained in the final project”, said Marina Silva.

“On each election, we invite the candidates to get to know the sports side. And this year the visit is even more special because of the choice of Rio de Janeiro as the host city for the 2016 Olympic Games. I was very glad to welcome Marina Silva and show objectives in a clear, open way”, said president Carlos Arthur Nuzman, that highlighted the Rio 2016 environmental project´s four policies: water conservation, sustainable energy, carbon neutral games and waste management.

Olympic athletes such as Carlão (gold medal in Barcelona 92), Robson Caetano (bronze medal in Seoul 88 and Atlanta 96 in athletics), Luisa Parente (artistic gymnastics) and Franco (beach volley); and the sports Confederation presidents were also present at Marina Silva visit. The Rio 2016 Committee is in contact with the other presidential candidates to make the same presentation.

Governor Sérgio Cabral started the perforation work of the Metro Line 4 tunnel, which will make the connection between the Western and Southern Zones of the city, where two of the four sports competition clusters will be installed for the Rio 2016 Games. Metro Line 4 is part of a group of infrastructure legacy commitments of the Olympic Games to the city, which the three levels of government took up with the International Olympic Committee during the Rio bid.

At the ceremony for the beginning of the constructions, Governor Sérgio Cabral informed that the Metro Line 4 will be delivered to the population in 2015. “This is going to be a great legacy for the next generations. We are building the 2016 generation, which will have a lot better quality of life, which will live in a lot better city. And we said that while we were fighting to get the Olympic Games.”, stated the Governor.

Rio 2016 Games Organizing Committee president, Carlos Nuzman, present at the event, congratulated Governor Sérgio Cabral for the political decision of embracing the Games cause and believing in the investment in the city of Rio de Janeiro. “I consider this work as an icon of the transformation that the Olympic Games can do for a city”, stated Nuzman.

For the beginning of the constructions, 1,500 native plants were withdrawn, most of which bromeliads, from the area where the digging will take place. The plants were taken to the Botanical Gardens of Rio. The action shows the commitment Rio government has with the environment – a vision that will govern the procedures from beginning to end.

The event had the presence of Vice-governor Luiz Fernando de Souza Pezão, secretary Chief of Staff, Régis Fitcher, State secretary of Transport, Sebastião Rodrigues, Rio Games CEO, Leonardo Gryner and Rio 2016 Institutional Relations director, Agemar Sanctos, besides several other commercial association representatives and local population.

On the date the Olympic Day is worldly celebrated, the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Organizing Committee started the final phase of the process that will chose the company responsible to create the first edition of the South American Olympic Games brand. This Wednesday 23rd, representatives for the eight finalist companies participated in a technical briefing with the guidance on content and ways of presenting the creative proposals. The name of the winner will be published in September.

After going through the three phases and leaving behind 130 competitors, the companies Brainbox Design (PR), Dupla Design (RJ), Future Brand (SP), Gad Design (SP), Soter Design (RJ), Studio Lúmen (PR), Tátil Design (RJ) and Vinte Zero Um (RJ) will have by August 4th to present their proposals for a logo. To inspire the finalists, the Rio 2016 Committee got into the Olympic Day atmosphere gathering in the technical briefing three speakers with a great connection to the Games. Beijing 2008 bronze medalist, sailor Isabel Swan talked about her experience as an Olympic athlete. Brad Copeland, graphic designer and International Olympic Committee consultant for the Games visual identity, explained the creative steps of the Olympic brand. On the other hand, Theodora Mantzaris presented the case Athens 2004 Games Brand Program, of which she had been Design Director.

After the talks, Beth Lula, Rio 2016 Committee brand manager, presented the Rio 2016 Games concept and the briefing with technical specifications of the material that has to be presented by the companies. “It was a difficult job to appoint the eight finalists, since the level of the companies registered was excellent. We will have a brand of much success, which will make history in the Olympic Movement and in the Brazilian design. During the technical briefing, we pointed out that the brand has to reflect the local culture, but at the same time having global range; has to be aligned to the Olympic values, and avoid stereotypes and be inspiring for different audiences. Besides, it has to reflect the concepts of passion and transformation of the Rio 2016 project”, explained Beth Lula

Chosen to mark the beginning of the final phase of the selective process, the Olympic Day was celebrated for the first time in 1948. The date of June 23rd goes back to the foundation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) by Baron Pierre de Cubertin, in 1894. In Brazil, the date coincides with the National Sports Day, and the effort the athletes that already dream with 2016 was an example mentioned by the Rio 2016 CEO, Leonardo Gryner, at the closing of the technical briefing. “The athletes that want to compete in 2016 are already training today, six years before. And they will face all kinds of difficulties to be at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. As the event organizers, we cannot offer anything less than this effort and compromising. Let these athletes serve as inspiration in the elaboration process of the brand for, on the day of the announcement of the final result, the chosen company to feel as if receiving a gold medal”, said Gryner.

THE SELECTING PROCESS

The process for selecting the responsible company for creating the Rio 2016 brand started in April, when 139 companies registered to participate in the initial briefing. Eighty-six out of those presented the requested technical habilitation and qualifying documentation on the second phase. After the analysis from the Rio 2016 Committee team, 24 were selected for the individual interviews, which defined the eight finalist companies.

The finalist companies will receive a compensation of R$ 10 thousand. Concept, Originality, Creativity and Applicability of the brand will be evaluated. All finalist companies that hand in its creative proposal will receive a participating certificate as an honor for the contribution to the selective process.
The Judging Commission will be multi-disciplinary and made up of 15 members recognized on national and international levels, as previewed in the tender. The members will be selected by the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee for their experience in creation and approval of brand programs or for their distinction in the International Olympic Movement. The winning company will receive R$ 40 thousand for the brand creation and will sign a six month contract with the Rio 2016 Committee, with the possibility of renewal, for design services. Besides international recognition, the Rio 2016 Olympic Games brand will have exposition for the next six years and will be eternized in the future Rio 2016 Games images, broadcasted to billions of spectators around the world.

UPCOMING PHASES

8/04 – Creative Proposals to be handed in – Phase 5
8/06 and 8/07 – Judging Commission meeting and winner choice
Rio 2016 brand to be sent for IOC final approval
