Lillehammer students learning at the IOC

October 30th, 2015

Using the Winter Youth Olympic Games as a catalyst, the Lillehammer University College introduced the new Bachelor programme in Sports Management just last year with a view to working closely with the Organising Committee in Lillehammer.  During their visit to the IOC, students had the opportunity to hear first-hand how the Olympic Movement works; gain an update on Olympic Agenda 2020; learn how the IOC communicates with different stakeholders; and witness the blend of cultural diversities within an international organisation such as the IOC.

The learning doesn’t stop in the classroom for these students.  As part of this innovative programme, the students will have internships within the Organising Committee in Lillehammer so that they can gather valuable knowledge about the complexities of running major international events.

One of the young students commented: “We had really inspiring days in Lausanne. After visiting the IOC we know much more about the Olympic organisation and the values it works for. It is also interesting to see that the theory taught in the classroom is relevant in real life.”

Trine Loevold Syversen, assistant professor and the person responsible for the Sports Management programme at Lillehammer University College, was as enthusiastic as the students, “Our students are theoretically well educated in event management, and with the internships in the Youth Olympic Games, they are getting the best practice within the field of sports management.”

Both the students and the members of staff from the university agreed on the importance of knowing more about the Olympic values, and why these values are so important for the IOC. Anders Lindstad, project manager for the Bachelor in Sports Management said, “We hope the Games in Lillehammer 2016 will be a celebration of the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect. I think our visit here in Lausanne was motivating for the students, and when learning more about the IOC and their work, I think they will become good ambassadors of these values in their future careers.”
